Best Health Resolutions For the New Year

I don't know about you, but every time the New Year comes around, my list of resolutions usually swells to encyclopedic proportions. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can choose just one. After all, everyone has flaws, and there's no better time than the New Year to start tackling these things. But if you have to narrow down your list, aren't health resolutions the most important?

Health affects all aspects of our lives. And these days, in most countries, our health isn't as good as it used to be. So why not take this opportunity to begin correcting some of the health mistakes you've been making? If you're considering New Year's health resolutions, here are just a few to consider.

Commit to exercise: For starters, resolve to exercise 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes. This may sound like a lot, but according to what doctors say we need, it's actually not very much. Even if you just take a 30 minute walk, that's better than nothing. The key is consistency and persistence. Do it 5 teams each week, keep it up, and you'll find yourself in much better shape by this time next year.

Cut out junk foods: If you're like most people, there's a substantial portion of your daily diet that could be cut out entirely. More specifically, things like sodas, juices, candy, gum, and any other little snacks that you have throughout your day are probably unnecessary. Focus on having three balanced, nutritious meals every day. You can reward yourself sometimes, but it's best to avoid between-meal snacking. With this as a health resolution for the New Year, you'll be in good shape in no time.

Cut back on caffeine and alcohol: There's nothing wrong with moderate amounts of caffeine and an occasional drink, but reducing your intake of these things by half can only have positive health benefits. If you have 4 cups of coffee a day, resolve to make it two. If you like to have a few drinks on the weekend, resolve to keep it moderate.

Make appointments: Going to the doctor can be unpleasant, but we should all get regular check-ups. For one of your health resolutions, vow to make appointments with your general practitioner, your dentist, and any other specialist that you should be seeing regularly.

Broaden your exercise: For example, if you're a jogger primarily, resolve to branch out into regular weight training exercise. If you're into lifting weights, give swimming or running a try. We all should regularly practice several forms of exercise, and the New Year is a great time to start.
